That's right, it's not a joke. Will Smith, legendary actor but more importantly, master MC… has made his way back to the stage! Just announced outta the blue on Tuesday November 12th, Smith posted a video stating that he will be performing in San Diego at The Observatory North Park for 2 nights! But performing what? Well, if you're an “uncultured swine,” then you wouldn't know that he is The Fresh Prince! This 2 night event entailed a history of his hits & here's a little more detail about how the 1st night got Jiggy Wit It on December 11th, 2024.
The atmosphere of the sold out crowd was contagious, everyone had smiles on their faces! Who wouldn't? San Diego is about to witness a living legend that impacted our lives culturally! Thus, the lights went dark to loud screams & a tape playing. Smith’s voice was heard asking America's Finest City if we’ve been looking for him? Again, if we've been looking for him!? After a 3rd time, all lights on Smith to immense screams by the crowd. The Fresh Prince has returned! Unless it's me who is the uncultured swine, Smith starts rapping & it seems to be something new. Something unreleased! It's got a dope beat & he's got bars! After listening to what must be the hook, the song might be called something like, “You Looking For Me?” It obviously makes sense too because he did ask San Diego that multiple times. Now that I think of it, it's probably his comeback song!
Once the opening track ends, Smith is center stage with his arms open absorbing the energy. The fans were going nuts! I even said “Holy **** it's Will Smith” as I took a picture! After hyping up the town for a bit, the record scratches kicked in & the venue went off big time! Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It was happening before San Diego’s eyes & it had everyone singing, dancing & clapping to the “Na-Na-Na’s.” The fans at the front were going insane to such a masterful piece.
Following that, Smith brought it even more back with Boom! Shake the Room. Salutes to DJ Jazzy Jeff for being his OG partner at the start of their musical careers. Jeff is a phenomenal composer & where would Smith be without the music right? Every MC needs its DJ & Jeff is the man to be! The hook for this song had San Diego’s hands going up & down every time!
Soon after, Smith took it further back! Now we're in the late 80’s & what's in front of us is Brand New Funk. For any hip-hop head, this is a must listen because The Fresh Prince just spits fire here. The whole crowd was tuned in to Smith just watching in awe & bumpin’ to the old-school vibes.
As the set continued The Fresh Prince continued to relive his moments with memorable & cultural hits like Yo Home To Bel-Air, Men In Black & Summertime to end the evening. But what I feel is most important to take from this night, is that Smith takes the time between songs to speak to the crowd. Along with reflecting on his past, both positively & negatively, Smith motivated the crowd to do & be good in this world. That we don't know what the person next to us is going through. To lend a hand & be there to support & love one another. I was sorta expecting words like this to be spoken by Smith & I am very glad he did. It reveals that we are all human & fall down. We just need to acknowledge our faults & take the initiative to rise stronger.
Overall, this epic night with Will “The Fresh Prince” Smith, was definitely one to remember. It was absolutely fun & Evvntly looks forward to all of his entertainment endeavors in the future!
