Primus – Onward and Upward Summer Tour 2025 at Cal Coast Credit Union Amphitheater, San Diego

Primus brought their Onward and Upward Tour to San Diego, delivering a night of infectious grooves and controlled chaos. They brought their friends MonoNeon along to kick things off.

MonoNeon (gallery) grabbed attention immediately with a neon yellow ski mask, neon pink outfit, and a neon yellow bass with a sock on the head. The branding was top tier. The drummer opened with a solo before the full band hit the stage. “Jelly Roll” had the crowd moving instantly with heads bobbing, hips swaying, and bodies fully in the groove.

MonoNeon’s bass lines were hypnotic, and the energy he brought made it impossible to stand still, setting a perfect tone for the night.

When Primus took the stage, the trio launched into “American Life”, complete with a Star-Spangled Banner intro. Les Claypool’s bass line felt psychedelic, like he was playing with 12 fingers on the fretboard. It was thrilling in the best way, and the crowd was vibing hard right along with him.

Larry LaLonde’s precise riffs complemented every twist and turn, cutting through the complex rhythms. John Hoffman, on just his second tour with Primus, locked in seamlessly behind the kit. Songs like “John the Fisherman”, “Groundhog’s Day”, and “The Ol’ Diamondback Sturgeon” kept the crowd on their toes, every odd time signature and warped riff hit a groove.

The night closed with “Southbound Pachyderm”, featuring MonoNeon, leaving the Amphitheater grooving and moving. Primus remains the masters of funk and chaos, sending the crowd tumbling down a rabbit hole into their sonic wonderland.
