New The Devil Wears Prada ‘For You’—for us!

“... it’s a love song, but it’s a really sad love song.” Jeremy DePoyster (via Instagram reel).

What songs hit us harder than a sad love song? We the people live for them—in fact, it’s the most popular theme of songs in music all together. Heartbreak, the trials and tribulations of love... they are just a part of life, a mile in the path of time. So, needless to say, I can’t wait to blast this song during my next breakup. Kidding...

All jokes aside, I first listened to the song on my laptop which didn’t do it justice. Once I had a good moment to myself, I gave it a listen again with my headphones, and for me... ‘For You’... was spot on with lyrics, lyrics, lyrics. They had me in pieces.

The song starts off with the opening words ‘Maybe I'm out of my mind, but it's fine // I'm used to the way that it feels when the room is on fire // At least I can say that I try’. Right out the gate with gut wrenching familiarity. Immediately we can see where this song is going—and it pairs beautifully with the euphonious chords rising in the background.

The Devil Wears Prada is a band I observe many fans singing along to during their live performances— and by the time the chorus ran around during this song, I could already hear the crowd, with full emotion, vocalizing the entire thing. “It definitely has a Chemical feel to it,” Dani A. had mentioned to me, and she is completely right. During their show at the Belasco during their Eternal Tour, the room was filled with heartfelt voices of fans singing along to Chemical. There is a shift in energy within a venue when that happens—and it’s absolute magic. The power music, of word, is inestimable.

The song continuous with a strong and hearty instrumental construction for most of the number until we reach a little over halfway where you are left with a hushed tune being played at a slower tempo and Mike’s easily identifiable rough vocals screaming ‘Like a shadow // Like a ghost // Everything I give to you just // Dies in the dirt // Dies in the dirt.’ The chords are suddenly heavier during this verse and looped back around to the earlier melody and chorus. The song continues on with the same tone and clean softspoken vocals until the very last seconds where the track almost seems to get a slight brightness to it before completely ending. Perhaps this was to imitate the feeling of the song where the interpretation is that although we give the world to someone, and we don’t receive the same, we are still willing to love them. Although stated that this piece was about a partner, the absence of implication that the song is about a lover can also give the listener a chance to relate this to almost anyone in their life that this situation seems fit. To add, many comments below the music video itself present many non-romantic situations and circumstances into which this song connects to the fans themselves.

A new song wasn’t enough for The Devil Wears Prada, for the band put out a beautiful music video, directed by Wyatt Clough. The video features the band on a square space of land ina sky of pink and clouds. A few moments later the video transitions and becomes centered around contemporary dancer Kelly Shaw who is styled in all black with a veil performing in front of a grave in the center of the square space. In the video we see vocalist Mike Hranica throw flowers in the grave and observe drummer Giuseppe, keyboardist Jonathan, bassist Mason, and guitarist Kyle playing in various locations of the setting—as well as clips of them changing locations and in mourning. The artwork matches perfectly with the song, and I loved the simplicity of Clough’s visuals but the complexity of the emotion it evokes. The chorus goes ‘You can bury me, and I'll leave flowers for you at my tomb // My tomb // I do it for you // I do it for you’. The video reads to me the exact meaning of the song—willing to give your all to someone who would give you nothing. The love is not equal.

It has been since the Chemical (Acoustic) EP that The Devil Wears Prada has released something, but we’re happy to have another anthem to prepare for during their tour. Speaking of, the band just started their Metalcore Spring Break just yesterday along with the bands ERRA, Kingdome of Giants, and Acres with the first stop being in Wichita Kansas, at the Temple Live. The release of ‘For You’ has me anticipating what’s next from The Devil Wears Prada. The more I listen to it, the more I fall in love. In truth, I’m humming it right now as I close this review.
